The story of the demise is copiously documented but no single exposé gets it right. All the postmortems I've read seem to look for a key point on which to rest the blame. There were many factors that led to bankruptcy.

Your cash-cow observation is one that most miss. A major factor was that management and eventually many mid and lower level employees were more interested in funding their retirement than the continued health of the company. We were spoiled and did not have the will to make necessary changes.
