The Founding Fathers may not have initially envisions a morally destitute president or candidate, but shortly afterward, the example of Vice-President Aaron Burr arrived. He was tried for treason in 1807 for trying to set up his own country on the western frontier.
While the Founding Fathers could not be expected to cover all future situations, the Congress did not take steps to prevent another Burr even with his example.
