Laying Siege to Castle Medium

Seems like an image of an English castle is appropriate, since that is this author’s least limiting language.

Yon Castle Medium is mightily fortified. Surrounded by an outer wall, inner moat, and sporting towers with parapets, this stronghold may require a lengthy siege.

But no castle is impregnable. Readers are ensconced behind the walls. They must be liberated!

Perhaps numerous grateful readers will convey enough interest to generate beer money. (More cultured readers, for “beer money,” please substitute “compensation adequate to enjoy the bounty of Napa and Sonoma.”) Covering that expense will take a significant strain off my budget. Well worth the time, and I can enjoy the purchases made with the fruits of my labors while laboring. Symbiotic habits! What could be better? Let the siege begin!

After blogging for a small audience for years, I know that my words are pretty OK. Just like you, all my friends tell me how well I write. Well, maybe not all. Many of them value truth over kindness. For example, they told me that this one was too cute. (Can I do that? Can I link outside of Medium? This is a test.)

On Medium, my first attempt, I Run, But I Am Not A Runner, garnered an impressive stat: a 100% read ratio. I’d like to thank that single reader for actually taking a peek. Unfortunately, unless this fine person makes a monthly contribution directly to the proper bank account, I’ll be drinking extremely light beer.

So it’s the usual bugaboo. Marketing. Ugh. Of course,“If you build it, they will come,” but only if you figure out how to put it under their noses, grab their necks, and force them to read the damn thing. Both exhausting and overly aggressive.

As Dad told me, “No matter what you do, you’ll have to market yourself. So get out there and sell those light bulbs.” God, how I hated those door-to-door Boy Scout funding drives.

So it’s time to research how to get people to read my stuff. There are a ton of posts right there on Medium, and they should be able to help, right?

Perhaps I am easily confused, but many of the tips, like the following, leave me scratching my head.

Publications? Interesting concept. Different publications for different subjects…

I Write. Hopefully, you smile. Or maybe think a new thought. Striving to present words and pictures you can't ignore. Sometimes in complete sentences.
