Can't agree with this statement. His ruse was to pose as the savior of the hardworking "lower-middle" and "upper-lower" class who have seen their earning power continually decrease while CEOs, Corporations, and the Ultra-rich have acquired a much larger share of the wealth pie.
He actually blames the poor and downtrodden for the problems of his supporters. In addition to immigrants, he essentially accuses these people of siphoning off funds by means of government sponsored social programs. Hence he tells his hardworking followers that they pay to subsidize the "lazy" and unproductive and receive none of the benefit of their tax dollars.
This is ludicrous in light of his deficit-funded tax cut, which temporarily put a bit of copper in his follower's cups, and gold in the pockets of his real beneficiaries.
