A Walk In The Park
And lovely it was, in Thacher Park, near Albany, NY.
John Boyd Thacher made his fortune manufacturing railroad car undercarriages and wheels. Additionally, like both his father and son, he served as Mayor of Albany.
But it’s his wife, Emma, we thank for this beautiful park. John bought the land, but Emma donated it to the State with the provision that the 350 acres “be used exclusively as a public park and a natural scenic reservation.”
And we thank Mary for selecting a perfect October day for a visit.
In addition to stupendous views, the park features wonderful trails.
The Indian Ladder trail runs along the base of the exposed limestone cliffs. Unique and impressive!
The disclaimer signs inform hikers that rocks may fall at any time. Good we were not there at “any time.”
The Pre-Europeans would cut down a tall tree near the shortest rise of the cliff, letting it lean up against the ledges. Branches were trimmed to provide hand holds which formed the “Indian Ladder.”
We used the steps.
We were fortunate to be there on a spectacular autumn day, but it’s not a bad bet to visit any time of year. And for those not interested in hiking, the views from the cliff top are available only a few steps from the parking lot.
Thanks again, Emma.
